Kamar Thomas is a painter from Jamaica who makes large oil paintings which explore the fluidity of identity. Today, we introduce you his series “Schizophrenic Masculinity”.

“I’ve created a series of paintings that examine the fractured self-perception, inconsistencies and curiosities of masculinity by mining my own biography. Schizophrenic Masculinity is an attempt to make my own cultural uniform by trying to wear many at once and displaying the consequences of those attempts.
Diaspora is defined as a dispersed people living outside of their home country. Diasporic Identity is based on the divided self-perception that simultaneously participates in the culture of its native origin country while being alienated from that culture. This identity simultaneously appropriates and spurns the culture of its new country and does so in a contemporary context of constant digital scrutiny and consumption which in turn informs the degree and nature of appropriation and rejection. This, is Schizophrenic Masculinity.”
