Maria Cantisano, is a young digital artist from Dominican Republic and currently based in New York. Formally trained as an architect, she uses painting as a way to capture her gestures, identity and expressions – her process is not linear, and her style is fluid, often allowing the paint to drip and blossom into its unique form. Her distorted faces series are undeniably disturbing, often covered by droopy plants, she plays with the idea of a veiled identity. Enchanting, poetic and mystical.

C – Who is Maria Cantisano ? Where do you come from ? Dominica ? When did you start to make art ? Tell me about yourself

M – My name is Maria Cantisano, I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic. I have a Bachelor’s in Architecture from UNIBE, Dominican Republic and a Master’s in Advanced Design and Digital Architecture from ELISAVA, Barcelona. I began to produce digital art in 2013 as a way to express what was happening to me at the time.

« I have always utilized woman as an icon in my art, always ignoring her face and the specific features of it »

C –  You’ve got a powerful unique style. It reminds me Benjamin Carbonne. What inspires you? What is your main art inspiration ?

M – I have always utilized woman as an icon in my art, always ignoring her face and the specific features of it. Each individual piece is inspired by current romantic relationships and my art is how I can vent through these.

The title of each one of my creations, usually a word or a sentence, carry a significance along with the piece. I absolutely adore distorting faces and the human body, I think it shows more emotion than just portraying an emotion with human facial expressions.

C – What are your main creative tools ? Computer, camera, pen tablet …

M – My only creative tool is my computer, mainly work with Photoshop

C –  How the caribbean culture influences your artwork?

M – When I use botanics in my art, this is directly influenced by the carribbean. Also, When I distort my human figures they are usually melting or breaking down, which reminds me of the heat.

C – What is the favorite artwork you’ve made ? Why ?

M – My favorite artwork is titled Unaccompanied. I think the level of disfigurement I brought into this piece is one I had not achieved before and I am in love with it.
