Laurena Finéus (she/her) is a Haitian visual artist, educator, and art administrator specialized in painting. In her practice, Finéus has been concerned with representations of Haiti, relationality within its diaspora, and its growing archives across the globe through an array of figurative and painterly imagined landscapes. These elements are juxtaposed with personal memories of her life in so-called Canada.
“Highlighting the artist’s focus on painted portraits as her chosen medium, the viewer is introduced with an intimate confrontation that focuses on each woman’s individual experience. These portraits, strong in symbolism, incorporate her signature use of hybrid spaces within a Canadian diasporic context.”

“The word Déchoukaj in Haitian Kréyol refers to the uprooting of a tree from the ground with all of its roots; it comes from the French word “désouchage”. (…) Essentially, a Déchoukaj means to attack the goods and properties of corrupt notables as well as their henchmen.”

Often ignored in history books, these stories just see the light through oral traditions or live within our literatures.”
