Rolando Fernandez Alvarez is a Cuban artist who uses paint as a discourse and language to build his inner visual universe that he carries inside. Often using celestial references and depictions of space and the moon, Rolando’s illustrations are dreamlike and wondrous. His recurring use of flora and fauna reflect the interconnectedness of the universe, nature and animals, his imagination is plunged into the fantastical and the surreal. I use painting as a discourse, language and main means of expression to develop my work. Through it I can build that visual universe that I carry inside, never enclosing it within the same style. I am very interested in dialoguing with my work in dissimilar pictorial ways, that is where the work takes on a narrative sense. I make a lot of scenographic sketches to make a kind of illustrative painting where each one takes its own visual form, reconstructing stories and fables, bringing to them my ‘sui generis’ way of painting…
