In Focus: Inter-dimensional ancestors connecting to African & Caribbean heritage with Paul Lewin

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, and based in Miami FL, Paul Lewin is mainly inspired by his connection to Africa and the Caribbean; nature, science, ancestors, and dreams, and representation of our interconnectedness to the Earth. Entrancing and magic storytelling through his visual representations of sacred energies that help us to connect to our deepest roots.

Each of his paintings is created in a process similar to dreaming, about the flow, movement, and transfer of energy. We give off energy, we receive energy, we are made of energy.

‘The Visitor’ Acrylic on canvas 24” x 36”. A visit from the ancestors.
I’m super excited to announce an art project that I’ve been working on for the past 5 months! I was recently commissioned to create the cover art for New York Times best selling Sci-fi author NK Jemisin’s re-release of her short story collection “How long till Black Future Month?” I created the cover art and 4 images for the interior. It’s a huge honor for me to have my art grace the cover of one of her books. I don’t do a lot of commissions but I loved diving deep into her world and creating my own interpretation of it. She’s an amazing writer and storyteller. This is an oversized signed limited edition release from Subterranean Press.
”Iniko” Acrylic on canvas 20” x 24”.

The figures in my work represent my ancestors; ancient ancestors, futuristic ancestors, inter-dimensional ancestors. They symbolize my connection to Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Rituals, folklore, music, and art have all been passed down from generation to generation through the ancient art of storytelling. My work tells the story of me. Each of my paintings is created in a process similar to dreaming.

‘Arrival on Ganymede’. Acrylic on wood 24” x 24”.
”Symbiosis” Acrylic on canvas 20” x 24”

Meditation and dreams were very important tools in the creative process of my ancestors. I like to think of it as traveling inside to the place where my inspirations, emotions, genetic memory, and unconscious thoughts all collide.(…) Over the years I’ve often been asked what my goals are as an artist and my answer has always been the same. I want to go deeper into that place where the visions come from.

“The Offering” 30” x 40” from my 2014 series “Roots if the Cotton tree”.
“The Crow and the Carnival Queen”. This was the first painting from my Caribbean Folklore series from 7 years ago. It’s still one of my all time favorite paintings. Inspired by Caribbean Carnival.
