Born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, Thomas Haskell is a figurative sculptor who seeks to navigate tensions within identity, power, and political struggle.
Through the lens of traditional folklore and carnival characters, he uses the intimate material of ceramics towards unraveling and subverting existing forms of representation into new forms that carry pointed social critiques.
He wants to construct and reinvent characters in ways that confront the viewer with their understanding of Caribbean identities.
My greatest desire with my work is to be a voice among many that work towards amplifying Caribbean cultural representation beyond stereotypical media portrayals. As a Queer Trinidadian artist, I seek to be a part of a dialogue that keeps these traditional elements of our creative past alive. Together we aspire, together we achieve.
Carried across the Atlantic on her back, corrupting ecclesiastical influence.
