TILTING AXIS FELLOWSHIP 2023 (open call)

March 28th 2022 – May 27th 2022 ▪︎ presented by Fresh Milk in the Barbados.

Het Nieuwe Instituut and Tilting Axis launch the third iteration of a fellowship programme for mid-career or established applicants based in the Caribbean. The initiative aims to foster and stimulate mutual exchange between the Caribbean region and the Dutch cultural field. Together with lead partners – Het Nieuwe Instituut and Tilting Axis – other cultural institutions including The Amsterdam Museum, De Appel, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and Kunstinstituut Melly will collaborate with the selected applicant during the fellowship.

MALINALLI ON THE ROCKS (exhibition)

March 17th – July 23rd 2022 ▪︎ presented by Museo de Las Americas in Puerto Rico.

Malinalli on the Rocks provides opportunities for Latinx and Chicanx artists to explore and re-discover one of the most enigmatic historical figures of the Americas: La Malinche. For centuries Malinche’s legacy has been shrouded in mystery and today is no different than when she first encountered the Spaniards. If we remove the patriarchal lens and Eurocentric vantage, what we confront is a powerful presence, a woman that survived and overcame adversity. 

This exhibit will challenge us to reflect on how she should be remembered; what she did and represents, inmortalized in the artists’ interpretations. For some, many of the historical facts will be uncomfortable, unfair, and sexist.

New Blood (exhibition)

April 2nd – May 21st 2022 ▪︎ presented by Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts US Virgin Islands.

The New Blood exhibition series is about breaking the divide and giving all artists a platform for their work to be celebrated and appreciated by the community. The exhibition series features emerging and established artists from the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean. As with any great venture, it is the work of many. New Blood: The Final Chapter is a joint venture between CMCArts and Lucien Downes. This is the last exhibition in this series.​

Atlantic World (art fair)

April 19th – May 5th 2022 ▪︎ presented by Artsy online.

Welcome to the Atlantic World Art Fair. We are delighted to present 12 galleries and art projects focused on talented contemporary art makers in the Caribbean, the Atlantic Islands and the region’s wider diasporas. This is a dynamic, under-represented art territory with complex, intertwined histories, relations and cultures informed by peoples of Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe.

Our artists are nationals of, or reside in, Aruba, Azores, The Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Curaçao, Dominica, Dominican Republic, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, St. Maarten, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, US Virgin Islands, and their diasporas. From emerging to established artists, the Atlantic World Art Fair offers a catalogue of provocative artwork.

THE WHIMSICAL COLLECTOR (exhibition)

March 24th – June 19th 2022 ▪︎ presented by National Art Gallery of the Bahamas in the Bahamas.

The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas is honoured to announce the upcoming exhibition of The Whimsical Collector, a mid-career survey of works by Kendra Frorup (nee Hamilton), opening on Thursday, March 24th, 2022 and running until June 19th, 2022.

The Whimsical Collector presents Frorup’s robust body of work which spans from 1989 – present in an exhibit of over 70 works. A quick-witted Bahamian multi-media artist whose work includes large scale installations that incorporate printmaking and sculptural practices, Frorup cleverly explores material and interactive elements that have delighted audiences everywhere. Frorup will also present a new collaborative installation that includes elements from the wider Bahamian community.

Bodies of Memory by Sonja Dumas (exhibition)

March 26th – April 13th 2022 ▪︎ presented by Medulla Art Gallery in Trinidad and Tobago.

Bodies of Memory is part of the research by Sonja Dumas for her Ph.D. in Cultural studies, which investigates certain aspects of the history of movement culture in Trinidad and Tobago. It is an immersive, interactive space to navigate feelings about the Middle Passage and its effect on the body.

Collective creations with Lionel St Eloi (collaborative exhibition)

April 7th – May 14th 2022 ▪︎ presented by Le Centre d’Art in Haiti.

Le Centre D’art in Haiti gives free rein to Lionel St Eloi this April. The sculptor proposes to realize a collective creation with emerging artists on Thursdays and Saturdays, until May 14, 2022 between 10 am and 1 pm. At least 10 artists (painters, sculptors) take part in this collective creation.

Colonial Swag, by April Bey (solo show)

April 21st – May 28th 2022 ▪︎ presented by Tern Gallery in the Bahamas.

Colonial Swag, a solo exhibition of paintings, tapestries and mixed media by artist April Bey. Raised in Nassau on the island of New Providence in The Bahamas and currently residing in Los Angeles, Bey’s interdisciplinary work combines American and Bahamian visual culture and contemporary pop culture into potent and imaginative social critique. Her work incorporates elements of feminism, generational theory, Afrofuturism, Afro-surrealism and constructs of race within supremacist systems. TERN’s first solo exhibition of Bey’s trenchant work, Colonial Swag, will be on view from April 21 to May 28, 2022, with an opening reception on April 21st, 2022, at 7p.m.

Saudade, featuring works by Charlotte Keates and Freya Douglas Morris (exhibition)

February 24th 2022 ▪︎ presented by Mestre Projects in Bahamas.

Mestre has the pleasure of presenting an exhibition with the works of two phenomenal artists: Charlotte Keates and Freya Douglas Morris. The works we are presented with, part and parcel, share linkages with their Romantic (and Enlightenment) ancestral brethren while being acutely aware of how they are situated within a context of contemporary abstraction, which reaches toward the future. They possess unfettered “inward stretch and outward” as they settle on material, aesthetic and thematic choices–finding connections between culture and nature, land and people, and fine tuning our ethical compass. There is a sense of wonder and transcendence.

Kingston Creative | Paint the City III | Application Form (open call)

Paint the City seeks to develop murals throughout Downtown Kingston, with the ultimate vision of making Downtown Kingston an Art District. Tera Soil (exhibition)

March 14 – April 13th 2022 ▪︎ presented by Cas di Cultura in Aruba.

Throughout history, artists have often explored their sense of identity through art. For some local artists, questions around ‘who we are’ remain an important theme. Our next exhibition presents the works of Olga Gabrielle and Jess Wolff, two local artists who introduce the Aruban landscape into their artistic discourse. Through very different perspectives and approaches, they explore their sense of self, place, and understanding of their environment by engaging with the land. TERA|SOIL will be on view at Cas di Cultura from March 14th till April 13th. This exhibition presents works by local artists Olga Gabrielle and Jess Wolff. “The People’s Collection” at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands

To provide the community with greater access to the history of the National Collection, and as part of our programming for “The People’s Collection”, our exhibitions team will be hosting guided English tours every first and third Wednesday of the month, as well as Spanish tours every first Tuesday, at 12:30pm through April 2022.
